Sometimes quiet is nice

Gizmodo had a blurb on the new Western Digital 500GB HD which they carried from the Inqurier. Both sites gave a big meh to the what WD calles thier WhisperDrive technology, not because it doesn’t work (it’s not out yet, so no one knows if it works), but because they don’t see the need for trading a bit of performance for less sound…

Gizmodo:

Not sure how much you need such a quiet drive, but most people I know would rather have the speed.

The Inqurier:

I’ll take the speed, and put the NAS box in the closet.

Personally, I hope these drives really are quieter. Sure I could care less about the noise of the drives in the closet, but something really needs to be done about the local HD on the Motorola DVR in my bedroom, I’ve been woken up by that thing spinning up to record. Hard drives are in a lot more places then just the server closet.

Bloglines Mobile Feature Request seconded- Reformat Linked Pages for Mobile Viewing

I completely agree with Joshs request for mobile formatting of Bloglines mobile links. I do most of my blog reading on the train via Bloglines mobile on my Treo, probably around 70-80% of it. At this point Bloglines is by far the best (only?) option when it comes to seemlessly integrating the mobile space with the full blown PC interface. Unfortunetly I often find myself in the same boat, wondering if the link is going to be good enough to click and suffer through the pain of reading a page intended for the big screen, on the wee one. A feature like Josh suggests would be a huge improvement to the experience. I’ve toyed with the idea of piping all my traffic through a proxy running on my home server to do conversion for me - but let’s face it, I don’t have the time to set it up. Besides with all the services out there that do this already, I shouldn’t have to roll my own.

So yes, I think this would be a FANTASTIC idea.

I like Blues Clues

So we put Blues Clues on while I was vacuuming, and I’ve decided I like this show. Two reasons:

1) They periodicly receive “letters” from people, which are really intros to video clips. On this one they received a letter from TMBG and proceded to show a video for “Clap your hands!” :D Tylor started dancing, and I was rocking the vacuum. Blues Clues++

2) A bit latter they were singing “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” with two cartoon stars, a big one named “Twinkle twinkle” and a smaller one named (betcha can’t guess) “Little star”. After the song, Blue asks…

Yes asks, in english. Sometimes he’s a cartoon that barks, and sometime a puppet that can talk. Don’t ask me what that’s about, I haven’t paid enough attention.

Anyway. Blue asks what a star is, as in “how we wonder what you are”. Twinkle twinlke respondes that a star is a ball of gas, like the sun. They then sing the song again, this time replacing the word “diamond” in “like a diamond in the sky” with “ball of gas”. Oh, and if I have to say why this is cool, you won’t understand.
